Maimana (Afghanistan), Aug 3 – The formal extraction of three salt mines in Qaramqul district, located in northern Afghanistan’s Faryab province, commenced on Saturday, according to Hamayon Afghan, spokesperson for the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum.
A local private company is leading the project with an investment of 24 million US dollars. The company has secured a 15-year lease for the 14-square-kilometre area and plans to produce significant quantities of salt daily.
Alongside extraction, the company will establish a salt processing plant in the region.
This initiative is expected to create 500 jobs, significantly boosting the local economy, reported Xinhua news agency.
The Afghan caretaker government has previously awarded numerous mining contracts to both Afghan and foreign companies. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to initiate development and infrastructure projects aimed at addressing economic challenges and generating employment opportunities.
